Ivy Virginia Driver Improvement

Why take an 8-hour driver improvement course?

Virginia DMV uses seven attendance-reason categories. These explanations are optional; no selection is required here or during Ivy signup. After payment, the course provider collects your attendance reason, identity, license information and any required court paperwork.

Follow your court or DMV instructions. The codes below do not establish a mapping to every provider certificate option. Court-directed points require specific authorization; DMV decides eligibility, and Ivy does not guarantee points or insurance discounts.

COU

Court Required

A court has directed me to complete a driver improvement clinic.

This applies only after a court has directed you to complete a driver improvement clinic. If your court date has not happened yet, or the court has not ordered the course, do not assume a court-required reason applies.

Safe-driving points are not automatic

Safe-driving points apply only when the court specifically directs that they be awarded and the required court paperwork is verified. Virginia DMV makes the final decision.

DMV

DMV Required

Virginia DMV sent me a notice requiring a driver improvement clinic.

This applies if Virginia DMV notified you that you must complete a driver improvement clinic.

Safe-driving points

Virginia DMV decides whether safe-driving points apply under its rules. Ivy cannot guarantee safe-driving points.

INS

Insurance

I'm taking the course for a possible insurance discount.

Check with your insurance company before enrolling. Ivy cannot promise an insurance discount — your insurer decides eligibility.

No DMV safe-driving points

Virginia DMV does not award safe-driving points when the course is taken for an insurance premium discount.

VOL

Volunteer

I chose to take the course on my own.

This applies if you decided to take the course yourself and neither a court nor Virginia DMV has required it. If you are taking it before a court date without a court order, the voluntary category generally applies.

CMC

Commercial Driver — Court Required

I hold a commercial driver's license and a court directed me to take the course.

This applies only after a court has directed you to complete a driver improvement clinic. If your court date has not happened yet, or the court has not ordered the course, do not assume a court-required reason applies.
