My ticket is for speeding. What now?
Confirm the recorded speed and the speed limit on the summons, whether the charge is prepayable, and whether your court date requires you to appear.
Check the summons for the speed recorded, the speed limit alleged, and the specific charge written on it. Some Virginia traffic offenses are prepayable and others are not.
Speed can change the charge
Under Virginia Code § 46.2-862, driving 20 mph or more above the applicable maximum speed limit, or in excess of 85 mph regardless of the posted limit, is reckless driving rather than an ordinary speeding infraction. Read the charge on your summons closely.
